Last night’s opening of the newest solo exhibition by Pamela Asai, “Poems of the Sea,” proved that sometimes it’s good to step away from the gallery environment and put up an exhibition in a more domesticated space. Cosy warehouse, warm lights, delicious wine – and beautiful, completely coherent art collection for show!
Pamela Asai’s work has evolved over the thirty years of art practice, with an increasing emphasis on “the rush of making the mark.” The graphic focus in her oil paintings sees her utilise a simplified palette to create dense, vivid works that speak of the action of painting. In the tranquillity of blues and greens, her honest and intuitive pieces tremble with the texture and movement. Perfect in the homely, yet funky atmosphere of Bib’N’Brace Collective!
“Fluency is broken down, the real truth comes out”
As a language instructor, Pamela intertwines art and language. Her book of poetry, titled Ash, takes us through 365 haiku-inspired poems that aptly reflect the thought and the intention behind her painting.
Right hand for precision; left hand for the real truth. For Pamela, removing the comfortable, the familiar, and the fluent allows for the expression of the real, the uncensored, and the vulnerable. As a right-handed person, she uses her left to paint, constantly trying to put herself into a state of unbalance to reveal the real emotion. It is a real pleasure to see an artist unafraid to pursue art so instinctively and honestly.
